about
During the latter half of the Michaelmas Term 2016 The Gresham’s Girls recorded their first single, a soulful version of the Group James’ song Sit Down. The lyrics echoed the sentiment behind the choice of the School Charity that year which was Young Minds and just under £1,000 was raised from sales on Bandcamp and iTunes.
This year, having moved into our industry-standard recording studio in the new Music School, The Britten Building, thoughts turned to what the Girls could do next and under the expert guidance and experience of Justin Myers and Chris Cooper, a cover Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence began to take shape. The upbeat electro song was awarded Best Single at the 1991 Brit Awards, but with its ballad-type lyrics, was originally written as a more reflective love song. This is the style Justin and Chris considered perfect for the Girls’ voices.
The single will be available as a download from Bandcamp and iTunes from mid-December and all proceeds will go to this year’s School Charities, Opalagilagi School, Kenya and the I Afrika Boys’ Home in Nairobi, Kenya.
lyrics
Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand
Oh my little girl
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
